My Free Farm 2: the 3D farm that comes along on your phone

If you want one farm that lives on your computer and in your pocket, this is the game on the line made for that, with a few odd jobs that other farms don't have.

What it is

My Free Farm 2 is the 3D sequel in the upjers farm family. upjers calls it a cozy farm game for PC and mobile and advertises cross-platform farming. There is a browser version (all you need, the publisher says, is a computer and a working internet connection) and there are official apps on the App Store and Google Play, with further listings on the Amazon Appstore and Samsung Galaxy Store.

The start is small: a few fields. Before long, new buildings, larger growing areas and production chains appear, and completing tasks brings new crops, animals and quests. Chickens, cows, pigs and sheep supply eggs, milk and wool, and those products in turn feed production buildings that make finished goods. There are cosmetic skins for animals, from unicorn-inspired looks to rainbow sheep, and even stray dogs and cats can find a home on your farm.

How a session goes

The everyday loop is planting, harvesting, feeding and processing. What keeps it from feeling samey is the set of side jobs. In Night Mode, some special crops grow only after dark. You can go fishing for different kinds of fish and use the catch in new products, or take horseback rides to earn extra income. At the Tavern you put your products to use while completing additional tasks. Goods can be delivered by truck, and a pilot called Amy arrives by water plane with bulk orders.

A feature called Taste of Asia adds new buildings, decorations and dishes. Its centrepiece is the Sushi Roller, where you combine ingredients into sushi, which opens a whole new branch of production.

The social side covers visits to other players' farms, friends and guilds, and seasonal events run through the year. upjers says regular updates add buildings, decorations, chains and features.

The time it asks for

Flexible is the right word. A browser session at a desk suits the bigger jobs, like reorganising fields or setting up a chain. The phone app suits the small ones: collect, replant, send off an order. That split makes My Free Farm 2 the easiest game on the line to fit into a day with gaps in it.

Night Mode deserves a mention, because it adds a second rhythm. Crops that only grow after dark reward an evening visit. If your evenings are already full, simply skip those crops; the farm works fine without them.

How the money side works

My Free Farm 2 is free to start, with optional in-game purchases. On its premium information page, upjers says playing its games is generally possible for free, that the regular in-game currency covers all basic functions, and that the premium currency is not strictly required but gives further options: decorations and special features, faster progress, or exchange into the regular currency. Purchases are one-time payments, and upjers says it doesn't offer subscriptions.

On a phone, purchases sit one tap away. If that's a concern, set a store password or purchase limit on the device before you start.

A good fit if

  • you want one farm on a computer and a phone
  • you like side jobs: fishing, rides, a tavern, crops that grow at night
  • you prefer a 3D farm you can lay out yourself

Look elsewhere if

  • you want a strictly 2D, old-school look (try My Free Farm)
  • you want deep trading with other players (try My Little Farmies)
  • having purchases on your phone feels too close for comfort

What works

  • Official apps for iOS and Android alongside the browser version
  • Plenty of variety: Night Mode, fishing, horseback rides, the Tavern, the Sushi Roller
  • 3D farm that you can lay out your own way
  • Seasonal events and regular updates, according to the publisher

What drags

  • So many side systems that the early hours can feel crowded
  • We couldn't confirm from the outside exactly how progress carries between app and browser
  • Purchases are close at hand on a phone
